Oil-Immersed Power Transformers:
Oil-immersed power transformers are fundamental components in electrical power systems, designed to efficiently transfer electrical energy between circuits through electromagnetic induction. Their robust construction, excellent cooling properties, and high reliability make them the preferred choice for medium and high voltage applications worldwide.
Performance Characteristics
Oil-immersed transformers exhibit outstanding electrical and thermal performance. The insulating oil—typically mineral oil or biodegradable ester fluids—provides both electrical insulation and heat dissipation. This design allows the transformer to operate at higher power densities than dry-type units while maintaining stable temperature rise. Key performance indicators include high efficiency (typically 98–99.5% for large units), low no-load losses, excellent short-circuit withstand capability, and long service life exceeding 30 years under normal operating conditions. The oil also suppresses partial discharges and arc formation, enhancing safety and reliability.
Manufacturing, Materials and Specifications
The core of an oil-immersed transformer is built from high-grade silicon steel laminations. Grain-oriented silicon steel (Fe-Si alloy, typically with 3–4.5% silicon) is used to minimize hysteresis losses and eddy current losses. The laminations are stacked or wound into a closed magnetic circuit—commonly a core-form or shell-form design. Each lamination is coated with an insulating oxide or phosphate layer to prevent short circuits between layers.
The windings are made of electrolytic copper or aluminum conductors, insulated with paper, enamel, or resin-impregnated materials. The assembled core and coils are dried under vacuum to remove moisture, then placed in a welded steel tank. The tank is filled with high-quality transformer oil (e.g., inhibited mineral oil meeting IEC 60296 or ASTM D3487 standards) under vacuum to ensure complete impregnation. Finally, accessories such as bushings, conservators, radiators, oil-level indicators, and protective relays are added.
Specifications vary widely: typical ratings range from a few kVA (distribution transformers) to over 1000 MVA (power transformers). Standard primary/secondary voltages include 11 kV, 33 kV, 66 kV, 132 kV, and up to 765 kV. Tapping switches (off-circuit or on-load) allow voltage regulation. Cooling classes are ONAN (oil natural air natural), ONAF, or OFAF depending on fan and pump assistance.
Relationship with Silicon Steel Core
The silicon steel core is the heart of the transformer’s magnetic circuit. Without high-permeability, low-loss silicon steel, oil-immersed transformers would suffer from excessive core losses and poor efficiency. Silicon increases electrical resistivity, reducing eddy currents, while grain orientation aligns the magnetic domains to minimize hysteresis loss. The core directly determines no-load current, magnetizing inrush, and overall energy efficiency. Modern amorphous metal cores offer even lower losses, but grain-oriented silicon steel remains the industry standard due to its cost-performance balance and mechanical stability. Thus, the performance and specifications of any oil-immersed transformer are inextricably linked to the quality and design of its silicon steel core.
Application Fields
Oil-immersed power transformers are ubiquitous in electrical infrastructure. Major applications include:
-
Power generation stations – stepping up generator voltage for transmission.
-
Transmission substations – stepping down high voltage (e.g., 400 kV, 220 kV) to sub-transmission levels.
-
Distribution networks – reducing voltage to industrial (6 kV, 10 kV) or residential (400 V) levels.
-
Industrial plants – supplying heavy machinery, furnaces, and motor drives.
-
Renewable energy systems – wind farms and solar plants use oil-immersed transformers for grid integration.
-
Railways – traction transformers for electrified lines.
-
Marine and offshore – reliable power conversion in harsh environments.
Because of their excellent overload capacity, weather resistance, and fire safety (when using less-flammable oils), they remain indispensable for outdoor and high-power applications. Their synergy with advanced silicon steel cores continues to drive improvements in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
